| Several C.F. moms have joined together with a desire to create a support network for all C.F. moms in the Kentuckiana area. We were fortunate many years ago to have children when there was no fear of spreading bacteria among C.F. patients, so we had the opportunity to come together to support each other and develop deep and lasting friendships. This support is vital in building mothers up so that they have the encouragement and support they need to face a lifelong battle with this disease. Recognizing this need, we have created a “mothers only” support network, “Steel Magnolias.” The name Steel Magnolias stems from the movie which portrayed southern women whose grace, resourcefulness and inner strength exuded in the face of personal tragedy. The exclusivity to mothers is only to protect the patients from contracting bacteria from one another. The CF Foundation prohibits the participation of anyone with CF and B. cepacia from participating at CF Foundation-sponsored events. Based on the risk that the infection status of these individuals poses to others with CF, the CF Foundation believes this policy will enable people with CF who are not infected with B. cepacia to more safely participate in its events. The CF Foundation can identify alternative means for individuals with B. cepacia to participate. Steel Magnolias Mission Statement: Our mission is to establish a group that will provide support to cystic fibrosis mothers ~to provide opportunities to build relationships ~to partner with the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation in fundraising ~ to offer and receive support Thus drawing upon our inner strength, resourcefulness, and grace in the face of cystic fibrosis.
